2009 Snarry Games - Fic Recs for Team Snitch, LONG
I feel bad for taking so long to do this, but just as the Games started posting on Insane Journal, I got sick with pneumonia and a horrible cough. I've been doing good just to log in and check my inbox.
I'm still not up to par, but I've been doing really well in keeping up with the Games and thought I'd at least try and mention my fellow team member's fics here. The thing is, I'm pretty easy to please when it comes to the Games. I rarely get squicked by anything, and although het, mpreg, and gender-bender fics aren't my favorites, a fic with those things in them won't keep me from reading.
I still have several to read, but I doubt there will be any fics that I disliked. So as a rec post, I have to put them ALL here really.
But one in particular stands out for me - and I can't really say why exactly. Like I said, I don't care for het much at all, and explicit het even less. It just sort of makes my stomach churn to be reading about squishy girl parts and all...just, yuck.
So the fact that this fic has explicit het should have made it one of those that I liked, but not one that I'd love. And I'm not even sure that saying I love it is right either.
It's just that it will be one that I won't forget.
It was the feel of the story that got to me - the desperation, the love, the brokenness of the characters...I can't say too much without giving things away, although from the start I was sure I knew who the female really was and that may have been why I could handle the het part. The explicit het is so important to the story that without it, it wouldn't be the same.
If you passed this up because of the het warning, please try and give it another chance.
Now to be fair, I'm on Team Snitch along with Elfwreck. There is a fic on the other team written by a former alternate member on my team which I'd also like to mention.
It's long, so it looks intimidating, but don’t let it fool you – once you start, it will be over in a flash! I can't say enough good things about it, although it did make me sad in places, to the point of tears. But rest assured, it does have a happy ending.
As far as the other stories go, I'm not making a big old long analysis of them. I'm just supplying a comment or two about what I liked about them in general or how they made me feel. My point isn't to bore anyone or reiterate what others have already said. It's just that if you haven't had time to read any of them, you can go through my list and pick out happy ones, sad ones, cross-overs, or whatever you feel like reading.
I do have to say that none of these entries I have actually read. I know that seem strange, but I don't have time to read. I have a screen reader program which I use to make MP3 files of all the stories, then listen to them while I walk. I get a slightly different 'view' on a story than if I'd read. There are visual scene breaks that are not picked up audibly by the program, and that can be a problem at times, especially when there are lots of back and forth between present and past in some of the time travel fics. The scene break thing is not a fault of the writer. I and many others use some type of symbol combination, such as '~*~', to break scenes, and the reader program will speak those symbols so I know there is a change. When the text of our stories is posted on the web, the scene breaks are coded using an html line code and that doesn't get picked up and voiced. Overall, all the stories have been well written enough and descriptive enough for me to be able to visualize everything that's happening, and they've been thoroughly enjoyable to listen to.
Like, does she ever write anything that isn't great? Funny as usual (is it bad form to say how much I loved her story last year too, to the point I bought the DVD of the movie it was based on, but liked her take better?), and even though I didn't know the Tick, it didn't matter to the hilariousness of this…Man-Bat, Man-Bat, Man-Bat …what more is there to say?
Wow, what a powerful story. Anyone who's ever wished they'd done things differently will certainly appreciate this one. It didn't just bring tears to my eyes, it had them falling down my face. Oh, and the sex was hot too.
Another gender-bender that I wasn't sure I'd like much but did. She says it's loosely based on Snow White, but a fluffy fairy tale it's not. Creative use of the Weasleys made me laugh!
This is a cross-over with Pushing Daisies, which I don't know at all. It didn't matter because the story was wonderful. I'll never see cellophane the same again!
I've always been fascinated with Egypt and was pleased when I saw this story took place there (in Ancient Egypt). As you read, you can tell the staggering amount of research that was put into this story. Excellent job.
I've only started this one but had to stop because it was too confusing to listen to without any scene change prompt. What I've heard though, I've really enjoyed and I'm looking forward to reading it soon.
Dumbledore has never been one of my favorite characters, and this fic points out a lot of the reasons why. What's neat about this story is that it has Flitwick playing a large part in it too.
(Can I rec my own?) Well if you like Dark Fic in the tradition of annephoenix and amanuensis1, you'll certainly enjoy this one. The torture and abuse does have a point though…and there's a plot, and a mystery too.
Cross-over with Torchwood, although I really don't think you need to know the show to enjoy this fun story. Capt. Jack is so IC – he'll do anybody and anything, and he includes Harry in that. I love a jealous Snape, and Draco in charge is great.
I've also read the Team Cauldron entries, but I really need to get back to work and don't have time to go through them all right now…Maybe tomorrow, because they deserve to be rec'd too!
